Instant air fryer crispy fried onions
Ingredients:
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup buttermilk (or milk)
- Cooking spray or a small amount of oil
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onions: Thinly slice the onion into rings. You can use a mandoline slicer for even slices if you have one.
- Soak the Onions: Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour buttermilk over them. Let them soak for about 10 minutes. This will help the flour mixture stick to the onions better.
- Mix the Flour Coating: In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Coat the Onions: Take the soaked onion rings and dredge them in the flour mixture, making sure they are well coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.
- Air Fry the Onions: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush it with a small amount of oil. Place the coated onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Lightly spray the tops of the onion rings with more cooking spray.
- Cook: Air fry the onion rings for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook until they are golden brown and crispy. You might need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Serve: Once done, remove the crispy fried onions from the air fryer and serve immediately as a topping for salads, casseroles, burgers, or enjoy them as a snack.
Tips:
- You can add a bit of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture for a spicy kick.
- If you prefer a gluten-free version, you can use gluten-free flour.
