The Waitress Who Lost Her Job for Showing Kindness

For three months, Diane had quietly let a struggling young single mother and her baby sleep in the restaurant’s storage room. She brought leftover food and paid for blankets and diapers herself. The owner saw broken rules; I saw someone refusing to leave a family without help. When I found Diane, she explained that her own mother had raised her alone. She understood the hardship because she had grown up beside it.

I helped the mother and baby find space at a local shelter, then went back to the owner with one question: “Is this really the person you want to lose?” He reconsidered, and Diane returned to work the following week. My children still ask to visit—not for a favorite meal, but to see her. They remember how she treated us when we needed kindness. I remember how much she risked to offer it to someone else.
