Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Beef

Pat the beef dry with paper towels. Toss it with the cornstarch, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

In a bowl, whisk together:

  • Soy sauce
  • Beef broth
  • Oyster sauce
  • Hoisin sauce
  • Brown sugar
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sesame oil
  • Chili garlic sauce

In a separate small bowl, mix the cornstarch with the water to make a slurry.

Step 3: Cook the Beef

Heat a large cast-iron skillet or wok over high heat.

Add the vegetable oil.

Cook the beef in batches for 2–3 minutes per batch until browned. Do not overcrowd the pan.

Transfer the cooked beef to a plate.

Step 4: Cook the Vegetables

In the same skillet add:

  • Onion
  • Red bell pepper
  • Green bell pepper
  • Yellow bell pepper

Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until crisp-tender.

Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 5: Finish the Dish

Return the beef to the skillet.

Pour in the sauce and stir well.

Add the cornstarch slurry.

Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and peppers with a glossy finish.

Step 6: Serve

Serve immediately over hot steamed rice.

Garnish with:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced green onions

Chef’s Tips

  • Slice the beef while it’s slightly frozen for thin, even strips.
  • Cook the beef in batches to achieve a better sear.
  • Keep the bell peppers slightly crisp for the best texture.
  • For extra heat, add sliced fresh red chilies or increase the chili garlic sauce.
  • Marinate the beef for 20–30 minutes in 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and 1 teaspoon cornstarch for an even more tender and flavorful result.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated in a hot skillet.
