These Custard Cubes are a delightful dessert that combines a silky homemade vanilla custard with a crisp golden exterior. After chilling until firm, the custard is cut into bite-sized cubes, brushed with egg, and cooked in the air fryer until beautifully browned.
The contrast between the creamy center and the lightly crisp crust makes this simple dessert absolutely irresistible. Whether served warm or at room temperature, they’re a fun twist on classic vanilla custard.
What Are Custard Cubes?
Custard Cubes are made by preparing a thick vanilla custard, allowing it to chill until firm, then cutting it into cubes before cooking them until the exterior becomes lightly crisp.
They’re inspired by classic European custard desserts and transform traditional pastry cream into an elegant finger food that’s perfect for parties, afternoon coffee, or special occasions.

How to make Custard Cubes
Pour the whole milk into a saucepan and add the lemon zest. Heat over medium heat until the milk is steaming and just beginning to simmer around the edges, then remove it from the heat.
Meanwhile, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch in a large bowl until smooth, pale, and free of lumps.
Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the yolks. Once fully combined, return everything to the saucepan.
Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a whisk or spatula, until the custard becomes very thick and smooth.
Immediately pour the hot custard into a high-sided baking dish or square pan. Spread it into an even layer and press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Let it cool to room temperature before transferring it to the refrigerator until completely firm.
Once chilled, invert the custard onto a cutting board and cut it into even cubes.
Arrange the cubes in the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each one.
Brush all sides lightly with the beaten egg to help create a beautifully golden crust.
Air fry at 356°F (180°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cubes are crisp and evenly golden on the outside while remaining creamy inside.
Allow the Custard Cubes to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them plain or dusted with powdered sugar for an elegant finishing touch.
