A 13-year-old boy named Lucas became the first known child to be cured of a rare brain cancer once considered incurable, after an experimental treatment made his tumour completely disappear! ![]()

The extraordinary story began in 2017, when six-year-old Lucas Jemeljanova, from Belgium, was diagnosed with a devastating form of brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG.
The diagnosis was heartbreaking for his family.
The disease is one of the most aggressive childhood brain cancers, with approximately 90% of affected children not surviving beyond two years.
But Lucas’s parents refused to give up hope!
They travelled to France, where their son was enrolled in an experimental clinical trial at the Gustave Roussy cancer centre near Paris.
Doctors began treating Lucas with a medication called everolimus, hoping it might help slow the progression of his illness.
But what happened next was extraordinary!
As doctors monitored his condition through regular MRI scans, they noticed something remarkable.
The tumour was gradually shrinking!
And as treatment continued, the growth became smaller and smaller until it eventually disappeared completely!
By February 2024, Lucas was 13 years old and had been living for years without any detectable signs of the tumour.
His doctor, Jacques Grill, described the case as unlike anything he had previously encountered.
Researchers believe a rare genetic characteristic of Lucas’s tumour may have made it especially responsive to the medication.
Although the treatment hasn’t produced the same remarkable results for most other children, his recovery has given scientists valuable clues about how this devastating disease might one day be treated more effectively.
And perhaps the most incredible part is that Lucas was once given very little hope of surviving childhood.
Yet years later, he became a symbol of hope for families facing the same devastating diagnosis.
His extraordinary story is a beautiful reminder of why medical research matters, and how even the most unlikely breakthroughs can change someone’s entire future!
