Tips That Often Help
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
- Aim for 25–38 grams of fiber daily from fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
- Regular physical activity can stimulate bowel movements.
- Prunes or prune juice can also help because they contain fiber and sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol that can promote bowel movements.
If you’ve had constipation lasting more than 2–3 weeks, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or pencil-thin stools, it’s important to seek medical evaluation promptly.
