πŸ” Yields: 4–5 patties

⏲ Prep Time: 15 min | Cook Time: 10–15 min

πŸ₯„ Ingredients:

For the Patties:

  • 1 can (15 oz / 425g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (or quick oats)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste or ketchup
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 2.5 tbsp water (for extra binding)

πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ Instructions:

1. Prep the flax egg (if using)

  • In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp ground flaxseed with 2.5 tbsp water. Let sit for 5 minutes to thicken.

2. SautΓ© aromatics

  • In a small pan over medium heat, sautΓ© the onion in a little oil until soft (about 3–5 mins).
  • Add garlic and cook another minute. Let cool slightly.

3. Mash the beans

  • In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks for texture.

4. Mix it all together

  • Add the sautΓ©ed onions and garlic, oats, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, tomato paste, olive oil, spices, and flax egg (if using) to the mashed beans.
  • Mix thoroughly. If too wet, add more oats or breadcrumbs. If too dry, add a splash of water or more tomato paste.

5. Form patties

  • Divide the mixture into 4–5 equal parts and form into burger patties. Press firmly so they hold together.

6. Cook the burgers

  • Pan-fry: Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Cook each patty for 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  • Bake (optional): Bake at 375Β°F (190Β°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway.

🍞 Serve With:

  • Toasted burger buns (vegan)
  • Lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles
  • Vegan mayo, mustard, ketchup, or BBQ sauce
  • Optional: vegan cheese slices or avocado
