This German Rocks Recipe is an old-fashioned cookie that’s crisp on the outside, soft and chewy inside, and packed with crunchy walnuts and rich chocolate. These classic treats are easy to make, perfect for the holidays, and guaranteed to become a family favorite!
Ingredients
- 2 cups 250 g all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup 113 g unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup 150 g light brown sugar, packed
- ¼ cup 50 g granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup 150 g chopped dates
- 1 cup 120 g chopped walnuts or pecans
- ½ cup 80 g raisins
- ¼ cup 40 g chopped candied cherries (optional)
- ½ cup 60 g powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with the brown sugar and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped dates, walnuts, raisins, and candied cherries, if using. The dough will be thick and packed with fruit and nuts.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are set.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
- Once completely cool, dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.
