Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

2 chicken breasts (about 1 lb / 450 g), pounded thin

4 slices lean ham

4 slices Swiss cheese (or your favorite melting cheese)

1 sheet whole wheat puff pastry (or regular, thawed if frozen)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for flavor)

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

Preheat oven: Set to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare chicken: Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Layer each breast with 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheese.

Prepare the pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. If desired, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard down the center. Place the stacked chicken, ham, and cheese along the center of the pastry.

Braid the pastry: Cut 1-inch strips along both sides of the pastry. Fold the strips over the chicken, alternating sides, to create a braided effect. Tuck ends underneath.

Brush and bake: Brush the braid with beaten egg. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed, and chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

Serve: Let the braid rest 5 minutes. Slice and garnish with fresh parsley.

High-Protein Tips

Protein content: Each serving contains ~35–40 g protein depending on chicken and cheese size.

Extra protein: Add an extra slice of chicken or sprinkle shredded cheese inside for an even heartier meal.

Make-ahead: Assemble the braid and refrigerate for up to 6 hours before baking.
