grilled cheese sandwich


  • 2 slices of bread (white, wheat, sourdough, or your choice)
  • 2-3 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, Swiss, etc.)
  • Butter or margarine
  • Optional additions: sliced tomatoes, cooked bacon, ham, avocado, etc.


  1. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Spread butter or margarine evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, onto the skillet.
  4. Layer the cheese slices on top of the bread in the skillet.
  5. If you’re adding any optional ingredients like tomatoes or bacon, place them on top of the cheese.
  6. Place the second slice of bread, buttered side up, on top of the cheese and optional ingredients.
  7. Cook the sandwich for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  8. Use a spatula to carefully flip the sandwich over and cook the other side.
  9. Once both sides are golden brown and the cheese is melted, remove the sandwich from the skillet.
  10. Let it cool for a minute or so, then slice it diagonally and serve hot.
