Servings & Timing:
Servings: 12 rolls
Preparation Time: 15 minutes (plus proofing time)
Baking Time: 20-25 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours (including rise time)
Ingredients List:
For the Dough:
3 ½ cups (440g) all-purpose flour
2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (or 1 packet)
1 cup (240ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
1/3 cup (75g) unsalted butter, melted
1 large egg
1 tsp salt
¼ cup (60ml) warm water (110°F/43°C)
For the Topping:
2 tbsp melted butter
1 tbsp honey (optional, for sweetness)
Instructions:
Prepare the Yeast Mixture:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This activates the yeast.
Make the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is ready, add it to the flour mixture along with the warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir everything together until the dough begins to form.
Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Rolls:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and arrange them in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, leaving a little space between each one.
Second Rise:
Cover the pan with a towel and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they’ve puffed up and are touching each other.
Bake the Rolls:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.
Finishing Touches:
Immediately after baking, brush the tops of the rolls with the melted butter. If you prefer a touch of sweetness, drizzle a little honey on top while the rolls are still warm.
Serving:
Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm with a pat of butter, or use them to scoop up your favorite soup!
Additional Notes:
Storage:
Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply pop them in the oven for a few minutes at 350°F (175°C).
Substitutions:
Flour: You can substitute part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a denser, nuttier flavor.
Milk: Non-dairy milk (such as almond or oat milk) can be used as a dairy-free option.
Egg: For a vegan option, replace the egg with a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flax seeds + 3 tbsp water).
