Caramel Apple Puff Pastry

Ingredients

(Makes 8 servings)

For the Apple Filling

  • 3 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 2 teaspoons water (optional, for thickening)

For the Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 egg + 1 tablespoon milk or water (for egg wash)

For the Topping

  • ½ cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Optional: powdered sugar, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Apple Filling

  • Peel, core, and slice apples into thin wedges
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat
  • Add apples, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice
  • Cook for 5–7 minutes until apples soften
  • If needed, stir in cornstarch slurry and simmer 1–2 minutes until thickened
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly

2. Prepare the Puff Pastry

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C)
  • Roll out puff pastry on a lightly floured surface
  • Cut into 8 rectangles or squares
  • Place half on a parchment-lined baking sheet

3. Assemble the Pastries

  • Spoon cooled apple filling onto pastry
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce
  • Top with another piece of pastry (or fold to form triangles)
  • Seal edges with a fork
  • Brush tops with egg wash

4. Bake

  • Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden and puffed
  • Let cool slightly before serving

5. Serve

  • Drizzle with extra caramel sauce
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired
  • Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream
