Best Scalloped Potatoes


  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  3. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook for another minute to make a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in the heavy cream until the mixture is smooth and thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the sliced onions and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Pour half of the cream mixture over the layers.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, cheese, and cream mixture.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
