Vegan BBQ Tofu

Vegan BBQ Tofu Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 14 oz (400g) extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (check for a vegan option)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Cooking spray or oil for grilling or baking

Instructions:

  1. Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Place the tofu between two clean kitchen towels or layers of paper towels. Put a heavy object, like a cast-iron skillet or a can, on top of the tofu and let it press for at least 30 minutes. This helps the tofu absorb the marinade and become firmer.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, soy sauce, minced garlic, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to make the barbecue marinade.
  3. Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into cubes or slices and place it in a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the tofu, making sure the tofu is well-coated. Cover and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes or longer for better flavor. You can even marinate it overnight in the refrigerator.
  4. Preheat your grill or oven to medium-high heat. If you’re using a grill, make sure to oil the grates to prevent sticking. If using an oven, preheat to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Grill or bake the tofu for about 5-7 minutes on each side or until it’s nicely charred and has grill marks.
  6. While grilling or baking, baste the tofu with additional marinade for extra flavor.
  7. Serve your Vegan BBQ Tofu with your favorite sides, such as grilled vegetables, coleslaw, or corn on the cob.
