Ingredients
For the Filling:
1 lb (450 g) ground beef or pork (or a mix)
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional, for a warm, earthy flavor)
.
For the Potato Layer:
4 medium potatoes, peeled and boiled
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Topping:
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons melted butter
Optional: fresh parsley, finely chopped
Instructions
Prepare the Potato Layer
Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain and mash the potatoes while they are still warm.
Add milk, butter, and Parmesan cheese, and season with salt and pepper. Mix until smooth and set aside.
Cook the Meat Filling
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until fragrant and soft.
Add the ground meat, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, and cook until browned.
Stir in oregano, salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Assemble the Pie
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a round or square baking dish. Spread half of the mashed potatoes on the bottom of the dish, forming an even layer.
Add the meat filling on top, spreading it evenly. Cover with the remaining mashed potatoes, smoothing the top.
- Add the Topping
Combine the breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the top layer of potatoes.
- For added flavor, you can sprinkle additional Parmesan cheese or parsley over the breadcrumbs.
