Homemade Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients:
- 1 cup vegan butter (softened)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
- 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-4 tablespoons non-dairy milk (such as almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk)
Instructions:
- Cream the Vegan Butter:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened vegan butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.
- Add Vanilla Extract:
- Add the vanilla extract to the creamed butter and mix until well combined.
- Add Powdered Sugar:
- Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud. After each addition, mix on medium speed until the sugar is fully incorporated.
- Adjust Consistency:
- Once all the powdered sugar is added, the frosting will be quite thick. Add the non-dairy milk, one tablespoon at a time, and continue mixing on medium speed until you reach your desired consistency. The frosting should be smooth, creamy, and easy to spread or pipe.
- Beat for Fluffiness:
- After reaching the desired consistency, beat the frosting on high speed for an additional 2-3 minutes to make it light and fluffy.
- Optional Add-ins:
- If you want to add color or additional flavorings (like almond extract, lemon zest, or cocoa powder), do so at this stage and mix until well combined.
Tips:
- Ensure your vegan butter is softened but not melted for the best consistency.
- Sifting the powdered sugar helps to prevent lumps in your frosting.
- If the frosting becomes too thick, add more non-dairy milk a teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.
