Homemade Buttercream Frosting

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vegan butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons non-dairy milk (such as almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk)

Instructions:

  1. Cream the Vegan Butter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened vegan butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy and smooth. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add Vanilla Extract:
    • Add the vanilla extract to the creamed butter and mix until well combined.
  3. Add Powdered Sugar:
    • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud. After each addition, mix on medium speed until the sugar is fully incorporated.
  4. Adjust Consistency:
    • Once all the powdered sugar is added, the frosting will be quite thick. Add the non-dairy milk, one tablespoon at a time, and continue mixing on medium speed until you reach your desired consistency. The frosting should be smooth, creamy, and easy to spread or pipe.
  5. Beat for Fluffiness:
    • After reaching the desired consistency, beat the frosting on high speed for an additional 2-3 minutes to make it light and fluffy.
  6. Optional Add-ins:
    • If you want to add color or additional flavorings (like almond extract, lemon zest, or cocoa powder), do so at this stage and mix until well combined.

Tips:

  • Ensure your vegan butter is softened but not melted for the best consistency.
  • Sifting the powdered sugar helps to prevent lumps in your frosting.
  • If the frosting becomes too thick, add more non-dairy milk a teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.
