Easy Pretzel Bites
Ingredients
For the Pretzel Dough:
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup baking soda (for boiling)
For the Topping:
- Coarse sea salt (to taste)
- 1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Optional: melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the Dough Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat the Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Shape the Pretzel Bites:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small sections (about 1-inch pieces).
- Roll each piece into a ball and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Boil the Pretzel Bites:
- In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
- Carefully add the pretzel bites to the boiling water (you can do this in batches) and boil for about 30 seconds.
- Remove them using a slotted spoon and place them back on the baking sheet.
- Add Toppings:
- Brush each pretzel bite with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve:
- Allow them to cool slightly before serving. Optionally, brush with melted butter for extra flavor.
