Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions
Ingredients:
For the Burgers:
1 lb ground beef (80/20)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
4 slices American cheese
4 brioche buns, toasted
2 tbsp unsalted butter
For the Caramelized Onions:
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
Optional Toppings:
Lettuce
Sliced tomato
Pickles
Ketchup
Mustard
Directions:
Caramelize the Onions:
Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the sliced onions, sugar, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
Prepare the Burger Patties:
Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions and shape them into loose balls. Do not overwork the meat.
Season each portion with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
Cook the Smash Burgers:
Heat a large cast-iron skillet or griddle over high heat. Add a little butter or oil to coat the surface.
Place 2-3 meatballs on the skillet and smash them flat using a spatula (use parchment paper between the spatula and the meat for easy smashing).
Cook for 2-3 minutes until crispy on the bottom, then flip and add a slice of cheese to each patty. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked through. Repeat with the remaining patties.
Assemble the Burgers:
Place a patty on the bottom half of each toasted brioche bun, followed by a second patty.
Top with caramelized onions and any desired toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, or mustard.
Add the top bun and serve immediately.
